MAY 2022: New Interns, New Strategies, and the CMX Summit.

The applicant's time commitments were checked at the start of the month of May. The Outreachy program only accepts applicants who have successfully passed the eligibility rules, which include, applicants must have 30 hours per week for their project for at least 12 weeks of the Outreachy internship’s 13-week duration. We finally announced the interns for May 2022.

While working on reviewing the applicant’s time commitments, I was also mapping new strategies to drive engagement on Outreachy social media platforms. On Twitter, I was focused on increasing engagement, showcasing content like interns' success stories and positive feedback about the Outreachy program, and ensuring the page shows up frequently and is a go-to for content on open source internships and contributions. For LinkedIn, the strategies include posting more content about the program in order to put our name and what we stand for in our LinkedIn audience’s minds. Other social media platforms are being explored, and we will be rolling those out in the coming months.

I was opportune to moderate a panel discussion on "Building Inclusive Communities" at the Community-Led 2022 Summit. During the 3-day events, I met with other community builders from all around the globe. Sessions that are highlights for me include: "What is Community-Led? by Brian Oblinger, SVP, New Product, Commsor; "Creating A Community-Led Strategy" by Amanda Martin, Head of Community, Unbounce; and a speaker session by Victoria Cumberbatch, Community Strategist & Advisor, and Bri Leever, Community Architect, Ember, on "Creating Community OKRs." It was a privilege to moderate the panel on building Inclusive communities. I shared my experience as an African woman in tech and how this unique background and identity shaped my perspective and understanding of DEI. We discussed what is missing in conversations about global diversity in communities, how DEI efforts have impacted our virtual-first world, and how it has contributed to and challenged our work as community managers. The conversation stirred up the use of pronouns. Sage Sharp shared more insights on this. It was a great conversation from the feedback and continued discussion on the CMX community.

To wrap up the month of May, we had our Outreachy community's first intern chats on working remotely effectively. The conversation was first stirred up with a poll on our social media platform to understand people's perspectives on comparing remote work and physical work productivity. This was done via a survey on LinkedIn and Twitter. The result shows a large percentage of workers believe productivity is high when working. The chat held in the community was super engaging and continued on Outreachy's social media platforms.
